2024 Fall Newsletter

Mountain Update! This is your action ace news reporter, Bob McQueeney, reporting on all the conditions that are conditions at Sunday River.

Friday: On the drive up, the polecat guns were blowing snow on American Express. Pulling into Barker, there was snow all the way down Cascades. It was glazed and had some cat tracks on it, so no skiing top to bottom today. T-2 and Upper Punch were open. The rustic Locke Mountain triple accessed the skiing today, and was used for downloading, every tenth chair.

Sunday: Once again, this is your action ace ski reporter, reporting on all the conditions that are conditions at Sunday River ski resort. This reporter, having nothing on his agenda for this Sunday, traveled over to Sunday River to inspect the conditions. The temperatures are too high to make snow, but we expect lower temps come Friday. Currently, the groomers continue to put in a full shift, laying down stripes on 100% of the open terrain. Trails today are T-2 and Upper Punch. Interesting to note that a terrain park has been built on Upper Punch, but one could easily ski around these features. First chair was 8 AM on the Locke Triple, reload was at the mid station. After about an hour, the line for reloading was working it’s way up the hill and around the corner. (It is Sunday, after all). Down loading is every tenth chair, and they filled the chairs. Each time the chair is downloaded, the lift must stop for safety reasons, and unloading at the very bottom is the same thing. As I was leaving, there were more people coming up and parking had expanded to down Barker Rd.

Once again, the skiing was actually pretty good, approaching mid season conditions, but only for the two short runs. Smiles were all around, one skier exclaiming he will need a grin-ectomy as he was having too much fun. (Yes, there is such a thing!).

The groomers were hard at work early this morning, putting down stripes for us on 100% of the open terrain.
