Board Update April 1, 2013

Okay, April 1st, you know the drill. If you’re not in a fun mood, don’t bother with this, go read a book.
We’re Off to See the Wizard
Wow!!! That was an END OF SEASON PARRTAAYY. 67 paid munchkin members having a great time at the end of season gala. Once Treasurer Marshman started handing out free drinks and the “open bar” was going, things got a little fuzzy for me. I’ll do the best I can to replay what I remember.
First, to the line of munchkins buying me drinks, my thanks, however after the first three shots, only my body participated. My mind was spinning like a tornado….. Memories thereafter are loose at best.
I know I saw Dorothy, or was it our old friend Doris, and her ruby slippers? Toto was not there, but I recall three small dogs, or was that Betsy’s fur coat? Did I understand Betsy’s considering heli-skiing again next year? I hope I’m confused.
I think MJ was wearing a Liz Taylor wig. I seem to remember Paula in a Century 21 realtor outfit, and she’s leaving us to join the LPGA tour??? Was Herb dancing with some kid, fell and dislocated his shoulder? Did I understand that he’s now joining a mountain rescue team (in KANSAS??!!). HERBIEEEEE!!!!!
I seem to recall a Tin Man, or maybe Bruce M. reading poetry aloud and giving some bald, handicapped dude a copy of his poem. Was Mrs. Marshman there in a pretty birthday dress? I certainly remember a very youthful looking OCTO-Uncle John Wild in attendance. I’m sure a radiant Carolyn Landau was drinking “something” from a Sunday River cup.
I think Dickie was dancing with a keg of red wine while the Mayor of Munchkinland, Charlie, stayed late with his harem. What a life!!! Doesn’t anybody know he’s 60, but says he’s 80? Get an ID. It’s a scam!!!!
I heard Sunday River’s former owner Les Otten (the real Wizard of Oz) made an appearance on phone to talk to Doris (that’s true).
Did I really get a dinner seat across from Shirley, the best pie maker in Maine, and next to King John? Did my wife tip the cute bartender a $20? Why do I remember her eery laugh “that’s why you’re only SEMI-retired my deary”?
Did the entire Board of the club skip right out the door leaving a poor hapless trio of women to clean up after them? I thought I heard Bruce Larson yelling “No, no, don’t do it Carol, don’t follow the Yellow Brick Road”!!
Suzie got her carriage stuck in a snow bank and I heard me yell out “NEVER AGAIN. CALL AAA”. Very happy to report I made it home in one piece thanks to a courteous older police officer ferrying me back…..though the car seemed more like a cab……..and the officer looked like Clarence. Does Clarence drive a cab and chew gum at the same time???
Who knew a glass of warm milk is not supposed to go on top of that much alcohol? I don’t think my ruby slippers can be saved. Oh, gotta go……the Mayor’s coming home….and he’s with two cute munchkins, or were they Marge and Gail? This couldn’t have been a dream. Could it?
“The Man Behind the Curtain”
If you were there, you probably followed some of this. If you weren’t, I’m sorry, not because you didn’t follow it, but because you missed it. Great time by all from what we hear. Thanks to Suzie for the prep work and the Sudbury Inn for a p~rivate party and a great meal (did you SEE those appetizer spreads~venison and duck pate!!). Beau–ti–ful!!!
Enough “fooling” around (get it?) Zucchi, let’s get to the action.
Skiing
Skiing’s still HOT. This is may be the best part of the season. You get great clean, groomed runs early and warm comfy temps by 10 or 11. You take late lunches on the deck and figure out whether you’re up for a second set of turns in the afternoon. If you do the pm hours you find “corn snow”, and ultra-controllable skiing. By the time late afternoon comes you’re thinking “wow, THAT was fun”. Go do it, but please use a great abundance of caution at this time of the year. Heavy, sticky snow, variable conditions, under-snow little rivers, and “snow snakes” abound. We want everyone to enjoy their summer, staying in bed late because they want to, not because they HAVE to.
Mountain Events
Parrot Head Festival is this coming weekend with an abundance of music and beachy motif. This is where otherwise sane, but inebriated skiers stand in line in order to slide rapidly into a pit of water. They call it “pond sinking”, duh. I don’t really get it, but maybe I’m not the target market. Here’s the link: http://www.sundayriver.com/Events/Main/Winter/ParrotHead.html
Primetime Events
The End of Season doesn’t end all the fun, it just slows down a bit from here. We have a couple things already lined up so pull out your calendar and mark these down:

Annual Meeting Weekend, Sept. 20-22
Always a lot of fun. We’ll have golf, and biking, and hiking, and kayaking (that’s mostly on water ya know), and a dinner out and a potluck in. All this will be topped off with your election of a mostly new slate of officers (club, not police). In addition, we set this to coincide with Bethel’s Annual Harvest Fest (Saturday). We don’t have ANY of the details set, but save the date at this point.
2013-14 Nominated Slate of Board Officers (for election)
Most of you probably thought I write all this stuff to you because I’m a nice guy. Oh, mai no again. A group who came to an annual meeting last Sept. made the mistake of electing (forcing) me to do this. Sunday Sept. 22nd is your chance to elect new folks to make their own mess as a Board of Directors. You see, at the Sept. Annual Meeting I turn my 20lb gavel over and those of you in attendance vote for a new President and Board. Don’t worry about me, or Bruce, or Mary Jane all of whom are retiring. We get nice pensions, gold watches and a car. We’ll be fine.
This year the Board worked closely alongside the Nominating Committee in choosing and soliciting the slate below. I would like to advise that your currently elected Board unanimously supports an affirmative vote for the following slate in Sept:
President: Carol Larson
Vice President: Barb Richards
Treasurer: Norine Jewell
Secretary: Suzie DuBois*
Membership Chair: Anita Haskell* (non-elected position)
*re-election
Each of the above nominees has the desire to work tirelessly for your fun while the rest of us ski, or sleep in. Let me think…..duh,,,, let’s let them!!!!! FYI: Voting is at the annual meeting 9/22 only.
2014 Season Pass
Speaking of 2014, time is NOW buy your season pass for 2014. If money’s tight $50 gets the process started. Don’t miss out on the cheapest possible deal. Here’s the link: http://www.sundayriver.com/TicketsPasses/Season_Passes.html
The Board wishes all a warm, comfortable, terrific, and active summer season. Go out and enjoy. Pack in the warmth so that you stay nice and warm with yet another outstanding winter to come next year.
