Board Update, March 16, 2013

Hi everybody,
While most of you heard about the jungle rains last Tuesday, you may also be thinking “skiing’s over”. I’m here to tell you, as they say in France: “Mai no, mon poo poo head”. Les mountaines are back with la vengeance. The groomers have been doing their best and Friday was very good while today is even better. Great skiing, go get it. What’s more, that Putts-a-baloney Phil called for an early spring. Contrarily, the human weathermen are predicting 4-8″ of snow Monday night into Tuesday, you, you, you little rodent.
Rotary Wine/Beer Tasting:
Last call for tonight’s (Saturday) Bethel/Newry Rotary Club Beer and Wine Tasting. White Cap Lodge, 6pm, $30 at the door. My wife tells me I’ll be there, so maybe we’ll see you too!
End of Season Dinner:
You’re a little late to join the nearly 70 or so other friends at the EOS dinner Thursday. The final tally has been sent to the Sudbury Inn, so please don’t call Suzie now and say “oops”. We’re kinda already cut up and pickled.
Well let’s start out with this. We have a full house coming which is terrific, however parking is a bit dicey. Carpool if you are able and there should be room behind the Suds Pub as well as on the street. Careful crossing as we’re hoping for three foot snowbanks by Thursday.
Cocktails begin at 5:00 or you can start at home as I do (oops, I printed that, didn’t I?). Your first cocktail of $5 or less is on the club. You’ll receive a “chit” (coupon) which gets you a drink. Beers and house wines are $5 of less. If you want a mixed drink, you pay the difference. PLEASE, PLEASE always tip your bartender, whether chit or not. Tips are included in the dining room but not for the drinks. Thanks in advance.
After cocktails, around 6:30 we’ll storm the doors and take over the dining room. Bring a drink You get to choose your seats and your tablemates. Might I recommend sitting with folks you don’t know well? IF you choose to sit in the porch area be advised to see the presentation (6:30-7:15 or so), you’ll have to stand. If standing for a half hour or so is an issue, sit in the main dining room and……….if standing is a real problem you probably shouldn’t be skiing!
Dinner starts promptly when I shut up and we’ll start with a Sudbury salad before moving to the entrees. When all is said and done, feel free to hang around and have another after-dinner drink unless you have a long ride home (like Jordan). The room and the entire facility are private and closed for us.
Board actions:
Maine Adaptive Skiing
Your Board has donated $200 this month to Maine Adaptive on your behalf. Many of you don’t know but 15 Primetimers (about 10% of the club) count themselves as volunteers to MAS. Additionally, some other Primetimers utilize the skills MAS trainers offer for their own skiing (and other) needs. MAS’ key fund drive period is NOW with the Ski-A-Thon 3/23. More info http://www.maineadaptive.org/
Mahoosac Land Trust
Your Board has donated $100 this month to MLT on your behalf. For those of you who don’t spend a lot of time on our website, we link to MLT and have for three years now. MLT conserves land to maintain “unspoiled scenic views”, clean water, outdoor recreation, and “protective wildlife habitats”. Additionally, MLT and their guides have assisted PT with many nature hikes in both the fall and winter. What’s not to like here, as the Mahoosac Land Trust and we both seem to carry the same goals. If you’d like more info http://www.mahoosuc.org/
Financial well being
At the End of the Season the Board forecasts we will carry-over a minimum of $500 (about 20%) of gross revenue into a new Board beginning in September. We may well carry forward more. We’re in great financial shape once again.
New Board 2013-14
The Board of Directors have accepted the retirements of many of our long-time and terrific Board members. As of September, four-year Board member and President (me), eight-year Board member and Treasurer (Bruce Marshman) and nine-year Board member and Nominating Chair (Mary Jane Shiverick) will retire from the Board. The loss of 21 years of Board experience isn’t easily replaced, however the combination of the Board and Nominating Committee have already found and approved an outstanding and full slate of candidates for your approval in September.
It is our expectation that the Board changeover be transparent to most members. The new Board will continue with the major themes of the Club including a welcoming, inclusive and fun atmosphere; open lines of internal and external communication; a strong relationship with Sunday River; multiple events; discounts and of course, our signature 10am meetings.
We’ll see you Thursday or hopefully soon thereafter.
