Whoopsie……..
We’ve experienced a few whoopsies recently and without getting into the whos or hows, let’s focus on HOW NOT to repeat them. None of the recent spills was particularly outrageous, fast nor exciting, but all three ended in sled rides with one very cool helicopter ride (don’t try to repeat this, we hear it’s not so much fun). I’m also happy to report that none of the three injuries was especially damaging, the worst being a season-ending shoulder injury.
A few things may have contributed to these falls, and we should consider them for our own skiing.
  • Vision. Light conditions in early winter are difficult and the sides of trails often have moguls and soft snow, not to mention ditches and trees. Ski several yards clear of the edges of trails.
  • Control. It’s early season and many of us are in our first five to ten ski days. I promise, you will be as good as you were at the end of last season, however, not yet. Take it slow, this is like spring training in baseball and it’s a long season.
  • Form training. Consider skiing one trail BELOW your ability for a while. Even Perfect Turn trainers practce on blue trails, not blacks. If you ski blues try a few greens for form practice. You may be surprised with the results.
  • Shorten the day. Our members injuries happened toward the end of what they would consider their regular ski day. Muscles tire and one wrong move puts us on our back. Consider what your body is telling you. It knows you and cares about you.

Potluck cancellation:
Two of the above injuries happened just hours prior to our January potluck. Due to sudden accommodation and preparation issues the best course of action was the cancellation. We will now set up an early March potluck as a “make up”.
Brew Pub Beer Tasting and Sliders Party.
Don’t miss this one. It’s our first ever and won’t be repeated this year.
$15 gets you tastings of five different house brews plus apps, sliders, and ice cream. If you can find somewhere else you can do as well, go for it. If you want to be in this one, you need to move fast.
